Overview

The BSc (Hons) Health & Lifestyle Science course has a central emphasis on cultivating a deep understanding of how lifestyle impacts on health and well-being. It addresses how physiological, psychological, and sociological factors influence health-related behaviour, focusing on three specific overarching themes, Public Health, Lifestyle Health Science and Behavioural Science. The Public Health component investigates the factors that influence health, with a specific emphasis on being active and eating healthily throughout the lifespan. Lifestyle Health Science provides students with foundational, interdisciplinary comprehension of human physiology and function and how lifestyle choice impacts on human health. Behavioural Science examines the principles of physical activity and nutritional science to promote health and prevent disease.

Like the students completing the parent Public Health degree course, students will have work-related experiences in their modules. Graduates of this Health & Lifestyle Science course will be able to work in a range of Public Health roles and in the wider health and wellbeing economy, with an ability to deliver health and lifestyle advice to individuals and populations and contribute to the development and delivery of policies and strategies that focus on lifestyle health.

The overall aims of the course are, firstly, to provide students with a thorough knowledge of health and lifestyle science together with related theories and methods and, secondly, to enable to develop a range of appropriate intellectual and key skills. Furthermore, the BSc in Health and Lifestyle Science at Canterbury Christ Church University develops students in the following way:

The development of robust knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of health and the impact of disease on the human body.

Provides an awareness of lifestyle and health perspectives and an ability to apply these skills in explaining and solving real life problems in lifestyle and health contexts.

Supports a confident articulation of the broader social, economic, and political perspectives and theories on lifestyle and health.

Provides students with the ability to research and analyse theories, principles, concepts, and factual information relating to lifestyle and health.

The ability to critically evaluate different kinds of data collection methodologies and interpret data generated in accordance with central theories and concepts relevant to lifestyle and health.

Supports an appreciation of a culturally and socially sensitive learning environment, which is receptive to the complex needs of individual students.

A sound knowledge of professional skills and attributes needed for employment and/or career enhancement.

Course Delivery

The programme will be delivered at London School of Commerce, an associate college of Canterbury Christ Church University. The London campus is centrally located and all the prime attractions in London are in close proximity to the campus. Campus buildings are located in the London Bridge area, within easy reach of British Rail and Underground stations.

Requirements

To be eligible for entry to the Level 5 top-up, applicants must be in possession of 120 appropriate credits at Level 4, e.g. Cert HE Public Health. External applicants must also satisfy the standard Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) entry requirements for admission as set out in the University General Regulations for the Conferment of Awards Policy.

Non-standard Entry

LSC welcomes applications from all those interested in furthering their education. If applicants do not meet the standard entry requirements but can demonstrate that their life/work skills would make them suitable for undergraduate study, they will be considered.

The admissions procedure will include a careful scrutiny of application forms for evidence of:

Relevant work experience of a substantial nature and duration

Ability to pass examinations, which will be considered on merit

An independent employment reference

An assurance that the applicant has a reasonable command of English at CEFR Level B2 for entry at Level 4 or above (B1 for Level 0) via an independent external examination.
